Idea from BBC Learning Zone

Polar Bears

Key Info:

Polar bears must adapt to melting ice caps

Duration: 04:33
In the high Arctic, polar bears are witnessed behaving in different ways from those seen previously in 1996. Experts discuss the spectacle of polar bears hunting walruses instead of small ringed seals. They suggest this change is a result of polar ice caps melting and polar bears rapidly losing ice cover. The bears will have to either migrate south or come onto dry land and adapt quickly to a new habitat to survive.

Ideas For Use in Class:

Prior to watching the clip, ask students to identify the unusual behaviour of the polar bear and determine why it is unusual. Students can then be asked what triggered this abnormal behaviour. Students’ understanding can then be extended by asking what the two possible futures for polar bears might be: migration south or extinction.
